About the Instructor

Carl is a professional educator who began his photographic journey capturing weddings in the UK, where unscripted moments sparked a passion for candid storytelling. That instinct led him to Italy and ultimately Hong Kong in 2015.His brand, Beyond the Neon, reflects his true shooting style: stepping off the main thoroughfares and exploring the narrow alleyways, side streets, and local pockets untouched by heavy tourism where the city's real character lives. In his workshops, Carl helps photographers of all levels read light, build confidence, and master the art of reacting to the moment.Philosophy: Explore, enjoy the process, be patient, try something different, and keep learning.

FAQ's

Does the instructor use a particular teaching structure?
Yes! Carl uses the Test-Teach-Test framework. At the start of the walk, he evaluates your natural shooting habits and current skill set. He then provides targeted, hands-on instruction tailored to your goals before giving you immediate opportunities to put those new techniques into practice. This practical feedback loop ensures you see clear, measurable progress in your shooting over the course of the 3 hours.
What language is used during the workshop?
Carl is from the U.K. and isn't good with languages, so only English is used.
Are there any age or health restrictions?
Workshop participants must be 18 years or older (no children). While there is no upper age limit, please keep in mind that we will be actively walking outdoors for 3 hours. Due to Hong Kong’s heat, humidity, and active walking pace, this workshop is not recommended for anyone with significant mobility issues, underlying cardiovascular/health conditions, or who is pregnant.
Is equipment supplied?
Unfortunately not. If you would like to hire equipment, there are a number of places where this is possible in Hong Kong.
What equipment should I bring?
Any camera or smartphone works—just bring whatever you enjoy shooting with! Since we’ll be out for 3 hours, please bring spare batteries or a power bank for your phone. Note: Tripods are strictly not allowed, as they hinder mobility and speed on busy streets.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably and wear good walking shoes! To get creative angles, you might find yourself kneeling or even lying on the ground to get the shot, so wear clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty.
Do I need an Octopus card? (Hong Kong's travel card)
For Private Workshops only: Please bring a pre-loaded Octopus card so we can easily jump on local transport (MTR, trams, or ferries) to move between custom shooting locations.
What do I need for the editing add-on?
If you add on the editing session, or book private (editing session included), bring an SD card reader or ensure you have a confirmed method to transfer photos directly to your phone or tablet. Please note: the instructor does not provide camera gear, cables, or editing equipment. Ensure you have either PSExpress or Snapseed apps installed on your device; both are 100% free.
Should I bring water and snacks?
Staying hydrated is essential! Please bring a bottle of water to start, though there will be plenty of opportunities to buy drinks along our route.
What happens if there is bad weather?
Hong Kong’s rain, reflections, and umbrella-filled streets make for incredible street photography, so workshops run rain or shine! However, workshops will be canceled for safety during Red or Black Rainstorm warnings and Typhoon Signal #8 or above. In these cases, we will work with you to reschedule your session, or provide a full refund if rebooking isn't possible.
Is the workshop suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Whether you shoot with a smartphone or a camera, this hands-on workshop is designed to be an enjoyable, supportive, and educational experience for all skill levels. You’ll build real-time confidence, learn composition, and walk away with photos you’re proud of.
Is there anything I should do before joining the workshop?
To ensure you get the most out of our time on the street, please take a few minutes before the session to familiarize yourself with your camera or smartphone's basic settings (such as exposure adjustment, focus modes, and turning off flash). Since every device is unique, knowing where your key controls are will allow us to focus entirely on creative techniques and real-time coaching! You don't need to understand what they do, just where they are.
Can a friend or family member tag along without paying if they aren't participating in the instruction?
No, all attendees must be paid participants. Due to strict insurance requirements, unregistered individuals cannot accompany the group. If an unregistered guest attempts to follow the workshop, they will be asked to leave the area. Persistent non-compliance will lead to the immediate termination of the client's session without a refund.

Late Cancellations & No-Shows: Any cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled event start time, or failures to attend, are strictly non-refundable.
